AS1681 Purge Controls

Thermoline ovens are designed to comply with AS1681-2002 standards, ensuring safe operation through calculated, non-adjustable purge times and air pressure monitoring. These controls guarantee that sufficient ventilation occurs before heating begins, preventing equipment damage or injury.

Purge Timer

The purge timer is pre-programmed within the Omron purge controller and automatically activates when the oven door is closed. This system enforces a delay in heating until proper ventilation is achieved.

Key Functions:

  • Monitors the differential air pressure between the inlet and exhaust ports.
  • Shuts down the oven if blockages restrict airflow or if there is no pressure differential, which may indicate fan motor failure.
  • Complies with AS1681-2002 guidelines to ensure safety during operation.

Factory-Set Purge Times:

  • TD-150F: 7 minutes
  • TD-500F: 15 minutes

Purge Timer Process:

  1. Upon turning on the oven, the circulating fans activate, and the purge timer starts.
  2. The PURGE ALERT LIGHT illuminates to indicate the purge is in progress.
  3. Heating begins only after the purge cycle is complete, ensuring the oven is properly ventilated.

Purge Light

The PURGE LIGHT is located on the right side of the Omron controller for easy identification.

  • Red Light: Indicates that the purge process is active, ensuring sufficient ventilation.
  • The light remains illuminated throughout the purge cycle and extinguishes once heating begins.

Air Pressure Safety

Thermoline ovens are equipped with an Air Pressure Safety Device, which ensures proper airflow and detects any issues with the inlet or exhaust system.

Conditions for Activation:

  • Blocked Ports: The oven shuts down if the inlet or exhaust ports are obstructed, leading to increased pressure.
  • No Pressure Differential: Indicates potential fan motor failure, as airflow cannot be maintained.

Resetting the Air Pressure Safety System:

  1. The safety device features a low-pressure differential set at 5 Pa and a high-pressure differential set at 45 Pa.
  2. If triggered, this is a latching alarm, requiring the oven's power to be cycled.
  3. Before resetting, address the root cause (e.g., clear blockages or repair fan motors).

By maintaining compliance with AS1681-2002 and utilising these features, Thermoline ovens ensure both user safety and equipment reliability during operation.

Start Up Procedure

  • Before proceeding, ensure all internal and external packaging has been removed from the appliance, including all tape, plastic bags, and foam pieces.
  • Connect the supplied lead to the male IEC socket on the side of the oven. Then, plug the three-pin plug into a 10-amp or 15-amp General Purpose Outlet, as required.
  • Turn the main switch, located next to the temperature control, to the ‘ON’ position to start the oven.
  • The controller will not activate until the purge is complete. The red purge light will remain on, indicating that the oven is in purge mode and powered up.

Loading

TD-AS1681 volatile material drying ovens require constant airflow throughout the cabinet to maintain the desired temperature. Correct loading of the shelves must be considered for efficient cabinet performance.

Loading Requirements:

  • Distribute the load evenly across all shelves instead of concentrating items on a single shelf. This ensures unobstructed airflow throughout the chamber.
  • Keep the highlighted area of the cabinet clear of obstructions to maintain proper ventilation.
  • Never block the air vents on the rear panel.
  • Do not place samples on the floor of the drying oven.

Manual Reset Safety Thermostat

The over-temperature safety thermostat is not operator adjustable. It will electrically isolate the heating elements in the event of an over-temperature condition. This safety feature prevents overheating if airflow is blocked, which may occur due to air circulation fan failure or overstocking of the cabinet.

For instructions on resetting the safety thermostat, refer to the manual.
